PayGo recently joined the Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative (\u201cSGCC\u201d\u201d). Their \u201cConsumer Pulse\u201d surveys assess attitudes about smart grid and smart grid services. According to the latest \u201cwave\u201d of Smart Grid Consumers Collaborative\u2019s (SGCC) Consumer Pulse telephone survey of 1,001 U.S. residential electricity consumers nationwide, more consumers say they are willing to pay extra to invest in and support alternative energy than to improve reliability. The study also found that 44% of consumers were \u201csomewhat or very\u201d interested in Pre-Pay electricity programs. The study indicated significant interest amongst \u201cYoung America\u201d (61%) and \u201cConcerned Greens\u201d (51%). This data is consistent with previous reports, and confirms the growing interest in Pre-Pay as an additional behavioral approach to energy efficiency.<\/p>\n
The survey also tracked respondents\u2019 impressions of smart grid and smart meters, likelihood to participate in related energy programs, and favorability toward alternative energy.<\/p>\n
The report notes that consumer awareness of smart grid has remained relatively consistent over the last two years, with 53 percent of respondents never having heard the term \u201csmart grid.\u201d However, 54 percent of respondents who are aware of smart grid and its benefits are supportive, consistent with earlier \u201cwaves\u201d of the survey.
\n\u201cThe results from this study illustrate the importance of promoting the understanding and benefits of modernized electrical systems to all stakeholders in the U.S,\u201d said Patty Durand, SGCC executive director.<\/p>\n
